The son of a Dalry schoolmaster, he traveled to Virginia in 1761 and worked as an assistant to William and Alexander Cunninghames. He returned to Scotland in 1777 but later went back to Virginia. As of 1809 he was a surviving partner of Cunninghame & Co.
