Case Date Legal Subject Abstract
M'Lean of Drumnin v. The Duke of Argyle 29 Jun 1781 Prescriptive possession This case appears in Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson (letter from Boswell to Johnson, July 15, 1777). In 1777 Maclean of Brolas, acting through Maclean of Drimnin (the father of his son-in-law), brought action against the Duke of Argyll for recovery of lands belonging to the ancestral Maclean estate of Duart, which had been held by the Argyll family since the late 17th century. In the end, Maclean was partly successful: he regained Brolas. The success was short-lived, however. After Maclean of Brolas' death, the above-mentioned son-in-law, Charles Maclean of Kinlochaline, fell into heavy debt. Brolas was then sold off to appease his creditors.
