Legal Subject: Poor rates

Case Date Legal Subject Abstract
Pollock v. Darling 17 Jan 1804 Poor rates, Ordinary poor, industrious poor John Darling, a tenant of a farm in the settlement of Chalkielaw, refused to pay the required sum to go towards supporting the county's industrious poor. Darling argued that the law only required him to pay money to support the ordinary poor, and not the industrious poor. Adam Pollock, the collector of Dunse Parish's poor's rates, brought an action against Darling for the money. Noted in marginalia that the Court adhered on January 17, 1804.
