Grant v. Fraser

J.P. Grant brought a case to question the lordship of the lands of Mussadie and Mellagie in Inverness-shire. The Fraser family had obtained the right to these lands under a decree of sale issued around 1500. The support of the Fraser lordship was in the old record-book of the Sheriss-Court of Inverness. Alexander Mackenzie, as Sheriff-Clerk of that county, evaluated the authenticity of the book in order to determine the lordship of Mussadie and Mellagie. After the proceedings, the Court held that the old record-book and the title (retour) which contained the sale of such lands, were evidence to proof the enrollment of the Frasers in the Lands.
