Son of James Oswald, minister of Methven (1703-1793) and Elizabeth Murray; m. Margaret Dundas; father of the reformist MP, James Oswald (1779-1853). Bought Shieldhall in 1781. Avoided the West Indies trade out of an opposition to slavery.
