Son of Robert Bruce of Symbister and Margaret Bruce; m. Clementina Stewart heiress of Bigtoun; assumed the name Stewart; succ. by his brother, William. 1750 his men rescued some crew of the Russian frigate Issataffa, which had wrecked on his property.
