Son of William Alexander, Lord Provost of Edinburgh. m. Christian Aitchison of Airdrie and Agatha de la Porte. Left Scotland for France, ca 1777 then America. 1783-1811 lived in Staunton, VA., then Kentucky. A close friend of Benjamin Franklin.
